Anti-Social Media: A Review of "Look Up"

I feel like a bit of a hypocrite for writing this. After all, I'm using a form of social media to write a review on a video about how frustrating social media can be. But here goes.

I recently watched a video called "Look Up" created by Gary Turk. If you haven't seen it, please watch before you go any further.

It's powerful, right? How did we get to the point where people are so willing to cut themselves off from the people they care about just to talk to the ones they barely know? When did getting likes become more important than actually knowing people?

The truth is, I don't have an answer. And I don't think this guy is saying that we should abandon technology entirely. There are awesome things that we can do now because of social media. It's not all bad. But when are social lives are dominated by a screen, that's when the problem arises. Social media presents the very best sides of ourselves. The bottom line? It isn't authentic. It's a false representation of who we truly are. The best friends are the ones who see the good and the bad and still stick by you.

The point this guy is trying to make is be honest with yourself. What are your priorities? Would you turn down an invitation to have dinner with a friend only to complain on Facebook about how lonely you are? If this is the case, you're missing out on the richness of life.

If nothing else, I hope this video made you think.

Until next time,

Olivia
